elpedouthisnephew.AtfifteenXuandewassentawayb'yhismothertostudy,andZhengXuanandLuZhiwereamonghisteachers.18HealsoformedaclosefriendshipwithGongsunZan.Xuandewastwenty-eightwhenGovernorLiuissuedhiscallforvolunteers.ReadingthenoticeinZhuothatday,Xuandesighedheavily."Whysuchlongsighs?"someonebehindhimaskedbrusquely."Arealmanshouldbeservinghisemperorinthehourofperil."Xuandeturnedandfacedamaneightspanstall,withabluntheadlikeapanther's,hugeroundeyes,aswallow'sheavyjowls,atiger'swhiskers,athunderousvoice,andastancelikeadashinghorse.Halfinfear,halfinadmiration,Xuandeaskedhisname.
