片断:Chapter1INTRODUCTION1.DevelopmentGreenonion,ginger,andgarlichavepungentodorsandwarmnaturesandarecapableofexpellingcoldandimprovingtheappetite.Indailylifetheyareindispensableflavoringsforcookingdeliciousfood.Atthesametime,theyarevaluableherbswithanimportantroleinthepreventionandtreatmentofdiseases,usedforthousandsofyears.AsearlyastheEasternHanDynasty(A.D.25-220),thegreenonionhadbeenusedbyphysiciansasacommonherbtotreatmanyconditions.AsmentionedintheShenNong'sMateriaMedica,theearliestextantmedicaltreatise,whitestalkofgreenonionisindicatedforfebrileinfectiousdiseasewithchills,fever,sweating,andedemaofthefaceandeyes.TheadoptionofthisherbformedicalusebeganinveryancienttimebecauseitwasaplanteasytogrowandwidelydistributedinChina.Asaherb,ithasbeenmentionedinmanymedicalandherbalbookssinceShenNong'sMateriaMedicawaswritten.IntheInformalRecordsofFamousPhysicianswrittencenturiesago,wereadthatitcanbeusedtotreatheadachesduetofebrileinfectiousdiseases.DuringtheMingDynasty(1368-1644),LiShizhen,thegreatmedicalscholar,widelyexpandedtheclinicalapplicationofgreenonionbyincorporatingtheexperiencesofmedicalspecialistsinpreviousdynastiesandaccumulatinghisownknowledgeafterclinicalpracticeandobservation.IntheYuanandMingdynasties(1271-1644),thewhitestalkofgreenonionwasusedformanymedical,surgical,gynecologicalandpediat-GINGER,GARLICANDGREENONIONMEDICINALRECIPESricdiseases.BytheQingDynasty(1644-1911),thefunctionsofdifferentpartsofthegreenonionhadbeenclearlydistin-guished.AsstatedintheNewCompilationofMateriaMedicawrittenbyWuYiluo,thegreenonionisusedtopromotesweatingandthecirculationofqi(vitalenergy).Itisalsousedtoremovestagnationinbloodvesselsandrestoreyang,especial-lyinpatientswithaflushedface,vomiting,andretentionofurineandstool.Healsopointedoutthedifferencesbetweenthewhitestalkandgreenleaf:'Thewhitestalkhasapungentodorandawarmnature;thegreenleafalsohasapungenttaste,butacoldnature."Thereforetheyareusedtotreatdifferentdiseases.Aftertheextensiveapplicationofgreenonioninclinicalpracticeoveralongperiodoftime,physiciansfoundittobeincompatiblewithhoneyinthesameprescription,butamixtureofthesetwoherbsisaneffectivepreparationforinfectionofthegums.
